TRENTON, NJ – New York Yankees fans, New Jersey Devils Fans, and fans of the Giants and Jets can get their own license plates in New Jersey, but honorably discharged veterans cannot. That could soon change.
The New Jersey Senate Transportation Committee has reported favorably on Senate Bill No. 1022, a significant piece of legislation aimed at honoring the state’s honorably discharged veterans. This bill authorizes the Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to issue special license plates specifically for these veterans.
Under the proposed bill, the design of these special license plates will be determined by the Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs, in collaboration with the Chief Administrator. The design will uniquely identify the holder as a veteran and will also include the name and insignia of the military branch in which the veteran served. This is in addition to the standard markings or identification required by law on license plates.
An application fee of $15 will be required for obtaining these special plates, which is in addition to the usual vehicle registration fee. This bill also grants the Chief Administrator the authority to establish rules and regulations pertaining to the issuance and use of these veteran-specific plates.
Another compassionate aspect of this bill is its provision for the surviving spouses of deceased veterans. It allows them to retain the special license plates, a gesture that acknowledges the sacrifices of both the veterans and their families.
