NEWARK, NJ – Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé is calling on the public to assist in identifying two suspects involved in the robbery of a livery driver earlier this month.
The robbery occurred in the early hours of January 9, around 4:10 AM, in the 300 block of New York Avenue. The driver was dispatched to the location to pick up a customer. While assisting the customer with her luggage, the driver was approached from behind by two male suspects.
Both suspects, described as having thin builds, were wearing ski masks and black clothing. One of them, donning sneakers, brandished what the driver believed to be a handgun, pressing it against his right side. The suspects demanded money from the driver.
During a struggle with the first suspect, the second assailant rifled through the driver’s pockets, stealing an iPhone, $180 in cash, a wallet containing debit and credit cards, a driver’s license, and a work permit.
The suspects then fled the scene along New York Avenue towards Lang Street. A dark gray Kia Sportage SUV was captured on surveillance video in the vicinity at the time of the robbery.
