Newark Man Admits Involvement in Drug Trafficking Operation

NEWARK, N.J. – Ali Carney, a 45-year-old Newark resident, has pleaded guilty to charges related to his involvement in a drug trafficking conspiracy.

On Wednesday, Carney appeared before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton in Newark federal court, admitting to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine; as well as possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

The investigation revealed that from April 2021 through October 2022, Carney, along with other members and associates of the Grape Street Crips gang, controlled the drug trade around the Oscar Miles Village housing complex in Newark. Carney confessed to selling controlled substances nearly daily during this period.

The charges to which Carney pleaded guilty carry a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. His sentencing is scheduled for May 22.

All of Carney’s co-defendants have previously pleaded guilty in connection with their roles in the conspiracy.
