Arson Investigation Initiated After Mayoral Candidate's Car Torched in Portland

PORTLAND, OR — The Portland Police Bureau has commenced an arson investigation following the destruction of a vehicle belonging to Rene Gonzalez, a local commissioner and mayoral candidate, on Friday morning. The incident occurred outside Gonzalez’s residence and is being probed as a deliberate act.

Gonzalez, known for his strong stance on crime and homelessness in Portland, is running for mayor in 2024. His campaign focuses on addressing the city’s escalating crime rates and homelessness issues. Oregon Public Broadcasting reported that the fire that engulfed Gonzalez’s family car is suspected to have been intentionally set.

Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt referred to the incident as a potential act of political vandalism. This is not the first time Gonzalez has faced such aggression. In 2022, following his city council election victory, an individual identified as an “anarchist” was arrested for disorderly conduct near Gonzalez’s campaign office.

Gonzalez, a Democrat and businessman, gained his council seat by highlighting his opponent’s perceived weak stance on police and crime. His mayoral campaign echoes similar themes, with a recent advocacy for a city ordinance against drug use.

In a statement released after the incident, Gonzalez confirmed that no one was injured and expressed gratitude towards the Portland Police for their quick response. His office has yet to respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment on the matter.
