QUEENS, NY – Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Thursday that Kassun Brown, 32, of Springfield Gardens, was sentenced to six to 12 years in prison.
Brown had pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter for causing the death of off-duty NYPD officer Michael Ellis.
The January 17, 2020, incident, captured on video surveillance, shows Brown speeding through a stop sign and colliding with Ellis’ vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries.
Ellis, a resident of St. Albans and an officer in Brooklyn, succumbed to his injuries on his 35th birthday.
Brown’s blood alcohol content was over the legal limit. The case was prosecuted by the District Attorney’s Career Criminal Major Crimes Bureau.
