TRENTON, NJ – Governor Phil Murphy today issued a statement acknowledging the retirement of two of New Jersey’s most longstanding public servants, Governor Dick Codey and Senator Sam Thompson. Both are concluding their legislative careers as the 2022-2023 session ends, each having dedicated over fifty years to serving the state.
Governor Murphy praised Governor Codey, noting his record as the longest-serving legislator in New Jersey’s history. Murphy highlighted Codey’s compassionate leadership and his significant role during critical times for the state. Senator Sam Thompson’s departure was equally noted by Murphy. Starting his career as a Research Scientist at the Department of Health in 1972, Thompson’s journey through state government included impactful roles at the Turnpike Authority, contributing to major transportation developments like EZ-Pass and the Secaucus Interchange. Murphy expressed gratitude for Thompson’s service and wished him well for his future endeavors.
