Kyle L. Romey, 44, has been sentenced to approximately 54 years in prison for the murder of his mother, Denyce Breit, 67. The sentencing, which equates to 653 months, was announced following his conviction in November 2023 for the first-degree murder that occurred in October 2021.

The crime took place at Breit’s home on U.S. Route 54 in Sedgwick County. According to Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter, the evidence of blunt force trauma was clear to deputies at the scene.

The case progressed rapidly, with less than 10 hours between the initial welfare check and Romey’s arrest. Law enforcement responded to a call about a possible medical emergency involving Breit. After failing to receive a response at her door and being unable to locate her at local hospitals, officers forced entry into her home, where they discovered her deceased body on the living room floor.

Romey will be eligible for parole after serving his sentence. The conviction and sentencing bring closure to a case marked by its brutal and shocking nature.
