NEWARK, NJ – Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie publicly expressed regret over his previous endorsements of Donald Trump for the presidential elections in 2016 and 2020. Christie acknowledged his error in judgment, highlighting the importance of character in a presidential candidate.
“I have an admission to make: Eight years ago, I endorsed Donald Trump because he was winning. I was wrong. And unlike everyone else in this race, I can admit when I make a mistake. In the end, the most important characteristic of any candidate for president of the United States is simple: Character,” Christie posted on X.
Christie was in Trump’s second-tier circle during both campaigns as the former President kept the former governor close, but at arms-length from himself at all times. Christie most notably became the first former candidate to bow out of the 2016 race and stand by Trump’s side in an awkward moment captured on video.
Christie’s statement marks a significant shift from his earlier stance. He admitted that his support for Trump was influenced by Trump’s success at the time. Christie emphasized the necessity of recognizing and admitting mistakes in political decision-making. This announcement comes amid the evolving political landscape and reflects a broader reevaluation of the impact of Trump’s presidency on the Republican Party.
The video was one of many awkward videos and photo ops of Christie during his tenure as governor. Here is the Presidential candidate dancing on the Jimmy Fallon show.
