WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a significant breakthrough, the D.C. Metro Police Department’s Homicide Branch has apprehended an individual linked to the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman in Northwest Washington, D.C., on New Year’s Day.

The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours Monday. Around 1:18 a.m., police officers rushed to a hotel on the 4300 block of Military Road following a report of gunfire. There, they discovered Ashlei Hinds, an 18-year-old from Clinton, MD, in a hotel room, suffering from fatal gunshot injuries.

The investigation led to the arrest of 18-year-old Jelani Cousin from Northeast, D.C., yesterday. Cousin faces charges of Second Degree Murder while Armed.
