Melinda Katz Begins Second Term as Queens District Attorney

QUEENS, NY — District Attorney Melinda Katz was ceremonially sworn in for her second term today, marking a continuation of her historic tenure as the first woman to hold the position in Queens. The swearing-in, conducted by Supreme Court Administrative Judge Donna-Marie Golia, took place at the Helen Marshall Cultural Center in Queens Borough Hall, with about 200 staff members and justices in attendance. Katz’s youngest son, Hunter, held the Old Testament during the oath-taking ceremony.

In her address, District Attorney Katz reflected on her first term’s achievements, particularly in reducing violent crime. She highlighted the significant drop in shootings and murders in Queens compared to citywide statistics, emphasizing her office’s commitment to community safety.

Katz, a Queens native and product of the city’s public school system, has brought notable changes to the District Attorney’s office. Her tenure is marked by the creation of new bureaus and units, including the Conviction Integrity Unit, Human Trafficking Bureau, Cold Case Unit, Frauds Bureau, and Housing and Worker Protection Bureau, showcasing a broadened mission and modern approach.

Her public service record is extensive, beginning with her election to the New York State Assembly in 1994, where she advocated for vulnerable New Yorkers. Katz also served on the New York City Council from 2002 to 2009, contributing significantly to the city’s recovery from the 2001 recession.

Katz’s career includes time in private practice as a securities litigator for Weil, Gotshal & Manges and as a shareholder at Greenberg Traurig. She was elected as the 19th Borough President of Queens in 2013, a position she held until assuming the role of District Attorney.

As she embarks on her second term, District Attorney Katz pledges to continue her efforts in safeguarding the neighborhoods of Queens and upholding justice.
