PHOENIX, AZ — A fatal shooting in Phoenix has led to first-degree murder charges against Gary Parohinog, 34. The incident, reportedly stemming from an argument over a parking spot, resulted in the death of 26-year-old Edith Rivas.
Phoenix police were called to the scene at the 1300 block of East Mohave Street around 9 p.m. on December 14. Upon arrival, officers discovered Rivas with a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
Investigations revealed that the dispute escalated inside an apartment when Parohinog, infuriated over Rivas parking her car in a way that blocked his, confronted her. An argument ensued, during which Parohinog allegedly drew a small handgun. Rivas attempted to deflect the weapon but was shot in the upper left shoulder. Parohinog reportedly attempted to fire a second gun, which jammed. Following the shooting, Rivas’ roommate locked the door after Parohinog exited, and police were alerted.
Parohinog was arrested hours later and is currently held at Maricopa Jail without bond.
