Hempstead Gang Member Charged in Drive-By Shooting of Bronx School Teacher

MINEOLA, NY – Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced the arraignment of Oumar Barry, a 27-year-old alleged gang member from Hempstead, on charges related to the drive-by shooting death of Kimberly Midgette, a Bronx school teacher.

The incident occurred on April 1. Barry faces charges including Murder in the Second Degree, Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, and Assault in the First Degree.

According to the investigation, Midgette was shot in the face and killed while in her vehicle, with her 10-year-old child and a friend present.

The child was unharmed. Prosecutors believe Midgette was not the intended target. Barry pleaded not guilty and was remanded, with a court date set for January 23, 2024.

A juvenile co-defendant has also been indicted and arraigned in connection with the case.
