SYRACUSE, N.Y. – David L. Kirby, 34, was arraigned Saturday morning on charges of second-degree attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. This follows his involvement in the shooting of a pregnant woman in Syracuse last Friday.
Prosecutors expressed concerns for the survival of both the woman and her unborn child. Kirby, known to have a domestic relationship with the victim, was apprehended by a Syracuse police detective who witnessed the shooting at around 9:37 a.m. on the 100 block of Dickerson Street.
Kirby has a notable criminal history, including arrests for criminal mischief and a previous conviction for stabbing his sister and her boyfriend in 2017. He served two years in prison for attempted assault from 2018 to 2020.
During the court hearing, the prosecution requested a protective order for the victim and child, with Kirby’s bail set at $500,000 cash and a $1 million bond.
His defense argued for lower bail, but this was denied due to the severity of the charges and potential for them to be elevated. Kirby is currently held at the county Justice Center and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Thursday.
