New Jersey State Police Advise Caution for Online Transactions After Recent Incident

NEW JERSEY – In light of increasing incidents related to online transactions, the New Jersey State Police are stressing the importance of safety during in-person meetings between buyers and sellers. This advisory follows a recent armed robbery incident in Burlington County.

On November 26, 2023, Troop “C” Bordentown Station troopers responded to an armed robbery in Hainesport Township. The victim, intending to purchase an Apple Watch from a seller on Facebook Marketplace, was robbed of $100 by the suspect who feigned a sale. The suspect displayed what seemed to be a handgun when confronted by the victim.

After a joint search operation by Bordentown Station troopers and Mount Holly Police Department, and reviewing video surveillance, authorities identified and located the suspect. The suspect was apprehended at his residence, identified through a vehicle seen in his Facebook photo, and was arrested without incident. He has been charged and is awaiting a detention hearing.

In response to this incident, the New Jersey State Police have offered several safety tips for individuals engaging in online purchase transactions:

  • Utilize Community Safe Trade Spots, like the one at Robbinsville Police Department, for meetings. These locations can be found at safetradespots.com.
  • Arrange to meet in public, well-lit areas such as police stations, public libraries, or shopping malls.
  • Bring a companion for additional safety.
  • Confirm the seller’s identity before meeting.
  • Refrain from sharing personal information unnecessarily.

The New Jersey State Police urge both sellers and buyers to exercise caution and smart practices during transactions to ensure their safety.
