LEHIGH ACRES, FL – Recreational divers made a startling discovery on Thursday afternoon in a Lehigh Acres lake, finding skeletal remains. The site, located on Oakridge Circle near Joel Boulevard, has since become the focus of a complex investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
The Major Crimes Unit and Dive Team of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office were deployed to the scene. Various high-tech resources, including the Marine Unit, underwater drones, and forensic technicians, are aiding in the investigation. The dive team faces challenges such as the lake’s depth, nearly 200 feet, limited visibility, and the presence of large alligators, requiring additional safety measures for divers.
Initial assessments suggest the skeletal remains might hold historical significance. The investigation, expected to be lengthy, is being conducted with extreme care to preserve any potential evidence or artifacts. Sheriff Carmine Marceno has emphasized the importance of care and compassion in the recovery efforts.
Collaboration with the District 21 Medical Examiner’s Office is underway to facilitate further testing and examinations as the investigation progresses.
