NEW YORK, NY – NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced a partnership involving the use of Apple AirTags to help police locate stolen and carjacked vehicles in New York City. The initiative, described as a three-way partnership between the city’s residents, the New York Police Department (NYPD), and the business community, aims to address the rising incidents of vehicle thefts.
Mayor Adams emphasized the role of technology in combating crime, highlighting the AirTag’s potential as a tracking device when hidden inside vehicles. The NYPD plans to release a video explaining its use, noting the device’s long battery life and real-time tracking capabilities.
The second component of the partnership involves the NYPD’s prompt response to reports of grand larceny auto, utilizing AirTags to track and recover stolen vehicles. This approach is expected to put a break on the increasing number of vehicle thefts in the city.
The third aspect of the initiative involves collaboration with the business community. The Association for a Better New York (ABNY), upon Mayor Adams’ request, agreed to cover the cost of 500 AirTags. Steven Rubenstein, Chairman of ABNY, expressed support for the mayor’s efforts to enhance public safety and recalled the historical challenges of auto theft in New York City. ABNY’s contribution aims to aid the NYPD in recovering stolen vehicles and potentially deter future thefts.
