Rottweiler Mauls 70-Year-Old in South Brunswick

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A 70-year-old man in South Brunswick was bitten by a neighbor’s rottweiler while fetching his mail Tuesday morning.

According to South Brunswick police Deputy Chief James Ryan, the incident occurred as the man was at his mailbox. The dog, belonging to recent neighborhood arrivals, charged from several houses away, causing the man to retreat and call 911. During the call, the dispatcher heard the dog barking outside as the man attended to his wound.

By the time police arrived, the dog had left the scene. They found the man bleeding significantly in his kitchen. A sergeant applied a tourniquet before transporting the man to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He has since returned home.

Ryan noted that the rottweiler had previously escaped from its owners’ house. South Jersey Animal Control has issued a summons to the dog’s owners and ordered a 10-day quarantine.
