RARITAN, NJ – A recent survey by Gunther Volvo Cars Daytona Beach involving 3,000 drivers identified the most loathed highways in the United States. The survey revealed that California’s US-101 is the most detested, followed by other notorious highways, including two from New Jersey.
California’s US-101 topped the list, with drivers frequently experiencing severe gridlock, especially in San Francisco and Los Angeles. This highway is often compared to a parking lot during peak hours, contributing to significant travel delays.
The second most hated highway is California’s I-5, particularly through Los Angeles. Known for its endless construction zones and prolonged congestion, I-5 represents the complexities of urbanization and diverse populations in a single stretch.
Claiming the third spot is California’s I-405 (San Diego Freeway). The I-405 is infamous for its traffic jams, especially in the Sepulveda Pass, reflecting Los Angeles’ intricate relationship with automobiles.
Pennsylvania’s I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) ranked fourth, notorious for its historic charm clashing with modern-day traffic issues. The highway is a hotspot for congestion, especially in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, compounded by toll plazas and variable weather conditions.
Colorado’s I-70 was fifth, known for its challenging conditions through the Rockies and the Eisenhower Tunnel, where travelers often face delays due to weather-related closures and seasonal restrictions.
New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway ranked tenth. Particularly congested during summer weekends, the Parkway is a primary route for locals and tourists heading to the Jersey Shore, resulting in slower travel times and frequent gridlock.
The 25th most hated route in the U.S. is New Jersey’s I-80. This highway experiences regular traffic jams near the New York border and through urban areas, serving as a vital transportation link in the region.
Finally, in 43rd place is New Jersey’s I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike), known for its heavy traffic around Newark and northern sections, often exacerbated by accidents, construction, and adverse weather.
