Former Montgomery County Teacher Charged with Abuse of a Minor

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A former teacher from Montgomery County is facing charges for alleged sexual abuse involving a minor. Melissa Marie Curtis, 31, of Upper Marlboro, was arrested following an investigation by the Montgomery County Police Department’s Special Victims Investigations Division.

The investigation, which began on October 5, centered on claims by a male victim that he engaged in sexual acts with Curtis while he was a minor. The victim reported that the abuse started in 2015 when Curtis was 22 and teaching at Montgomery Village Middle School, where the victim was a student. The incidents reportedly took place over several months within Montgomery County.

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Curtis on October 31. She is charged with sexual abuse of a minor and multiple counts of third and fourth-degree sexual offenses. Curtis, who also taught at Lakelands Park Middle School, had been employed as a teacher in Montgomery County for about two years.

Detectives are concerned there may be more victims and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Curtis surrendered to authorities on November 7 and is now awaiting a bond hearing.
