BROOKLYN, NY – A man from Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn, was sentenced to a term of 12 years in prison on charges of attempted murder, announced the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office.
Ridhwaan Abdur Rashid, 46, had entered a guilty plea for second-degree attempted murder on September 26, and received his sentence on Monday by Supreme Court Justice Donald Leo.
On the night of March 7, 2021, at 9:11 p.m., New York City Police Officers responded to a 911 distress call. Upon arrival at a Hawthorne Street apartment, they encountered Rashid, who engaged in a brief conversation before brandishing an illegal .38-caliber handgun and firing at the officers, injuring two.
Officer Robert Aviles sustained a hit to his bulletproof vest, and Officer Jonathan Landro was grazed on the leg. Despite the exchange of gunfire, Rashid was not struck and subsequently barricaded himself in the apartment with the initial shooting victim, Damon Lindsay, and a third individual. Lindsay, who suffered gunshot wounds to the leg, and the officers, were treated at Kings County Hospital and released.
Following a standoff, the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit extracted Rashid from the premises. A subsequent search warrant led to the seizure of additional illegal firearms from the apartment.
