NEW YORK, NY – A Gallup poll reveals a steady American sentiment that the federal government’s role should be limited, with 54% stating the government is overreaching by handling tasks better left to individuals and businesses.

The prospect and worries about government overreach is not just a federal issue. In New Jersey, many are upset with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s use of the global pandemic to restrict the rights of Americans in that state.

This position has remained relatively unchanged since 2021 and reflects an average outlook since the early ’90s. Despite a notable shift in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic when the majority leaned towards a more active government role, the general trend reverted in subsequent years.

The September survey also notes that opinions on government overreach are often influenced by the sitting president’s political affiliation, with concerns typically escalating under Democratic leadership. During Democrat Joe Biden’s term, the view that the government is excessively involved has averaged a 10-point lead over the opposing perspective.

Additionally, 44% of Americans feel that the government excessively regulates business, aligning with long-term trends. However, beliefs about overall government power have remained steady, with 50-60% of Americans consistently suggesting the government holds too much power since 2005.

Partisan lines also play a significant role in these perceptions, with Republican and independent voters particularly wary of government overreach under a Democrat president. Presently, 81% of Republicans believe the government wields too much power, a sentiment shared by 59% of independents and 26% of Democrats.

The data underscores a prevalent skepticism about the breadth of federal government power, with a majority favoring restraint, especially in non-crisis periods.
