NEWARK, NJ – Newark Public Schools recently took center stage at the 67th Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS) Annual Fall Conference, contributing six sessions to the esteemed event. The District’s active role at the conference reflects its ongoing commitment to educational leadership and its engagement with key urban education discussions on a national scale.
The CGCS conference is a cornerstone event for urban education dialogue, bringing together a diverse group of educational professionals from across the country. The annual event serves as a nexus for exchanging ideas and strategies that address the complexities of urban school district operations.
Significantly, Newark Public Schools is New Jersey’s sole representative on the Council, engaging in this capacity for many years. The District’s involvement is anchored by its Board President and Superintendent, who hold voting positions on the Council’s Board of Directors. Moreover, Superintendent Roger León has been appointed to the Executive Board and will serve on the Leadership, Governance, Management, and Finance Task Force, an accolade last received during Dr. Marion A. Bolden’s superintendency.
The sessions led by Newark Public Schools encompassed vital educational themes, such as bilingual education enhancement, early childhood development strategies, K-3 academic success, teacher residencies, student engagement through enrichment, and innovative approaches to employee health and wellness. These topics showcase the District’s pioneering methods and dedication to academic excellence.
Superintendent León expressed pride in the District’s selection to present at the CGCS conference, a testament to the educators’ relentless pursuit of innovation in teaching and learning.
The Board President also emphasized the importance of Newark’s reinvigorated involvement with the CGCS, noting the reciprocal benefits for the District, the Council, and most importantly, the students. The collaboration with CGCS is set to bolster the District’s offerings, enhancing curriculum and student services.
