LANCASTER, PA – On Monday, East Hempfield Twp. Police responded to reports of a school van being driven erratically on Rt. 283 eastbound.

Concerned motorists reported the van driving well below the 65mph speed limit and weaving within lanes. The police intercepted the van east of the State Rd. exit, where the driver, Heather Shumberger, 40, of Harrisburg, began dozing off during interactions with the officers.

Suspected of being under the influence of medication, Shumberger was unable to complete standardized field sobriety tests successfully.

She was taken into custody and transported for blood tests. Four student passengers, aged 9 to 18, were on board from Harrisburg, headed to an educational facility in Mount Joy.

Another driver from Krise Transportation was arranged to take the students. Charges against Shumberger include DUI: Controlled Substance, endangerment of children, and reckless endangerment, among others.
