NEW YORK, NY—Trick-or-Streets returns for its second season, providing increased pedestrian space on Halloween night and featuring over 100 events across all five boroughs. The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) has joined forces with Open Streets, plazas, and various other partners to offer Halloween-themed activities, performances, and giveaways throughout October. The initiative extends into November to include celebrations for Día De Los Muertos, commonly known as the “Day of the Dead.”
The collaborative effort involves the NYC Street Activity Permit Office (SAPO), NYPD, and other city agencies, ensuring the closure of specific streets for pedestrian-only access. Various locations throughout New York City will transform into event spaces where people can participate in obstacle courses, admire Halloween decorations, and enjoy other activities without the interference of vehicular traffic.
Families have been quick to engage, with images circulating of young children dressed in costumes navigating obstacle courses and enjoying the open streets. Meanwhile, large crowds have been observed gathering at night to view houses decked out in spooky decorations, all on roads temporarily closed to cars.
Event organizers caution that all planned activities are subject to delay or cancellation due to weather conditions.
The second iteration of Trick-or-Streets aims to build upon the success of its inaugural year by providing safe, car-free spaces for holiday celebrations, enhancing community engagement and offering alternative ways to enjoy the season’s festivities.
