Purse Snatching Scooter Bandits Targeting Women Across Midtown Manhattan

NEW YORK, NY – Thieves are targeting unsuspecting women in Midtown Manhattan, according to the New York City Police Department, robbing their jewelry, purses and handbags, then fleeing.

The New York City Police Department is asking for public assistance locating individuals involved in moped-related thefts across Manhattan. The thefts span multiple precincts and have targeted women aged 20 to 73.

The incidents began on October 2 and have continued until October 22, affecting victims in the 9, 10, 13, Midtown South, Midtown North, 17, and 19 Precincts. Typically, two unknown males approach a victim on a black moped and snatch their purse or wallet before fleeing the scene. In several instances, the victims sustained minor injuries but mostly refused medical attention.

In the past week, nearly two dozen women have been robbed by this duo.

Among the incidents:

  • In the 13 Precinct, a 29-year-old female was approached near East 23 Street and Park Avenue. Her wallet was snatched, and the suspects fled eastbound on East 23 Street.
  • In the 17 Precinct, a 53-year-old female was targeted near East 30 Street and First Avenue. Her purse was snatched, and the suspects fled northbound on First Avenue.
  • In the 19 Precinct, a 47-year-old female near 260 East 67 Street had her purse snatched and sustained minor injuries. She went to a local hospital by private means.
  • In the 19 Precinct, a 73-year-old female near East 68 Street and Second Avenue was targeted. No property was removed, but she sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

A total of 22 incidents have been reported to the police. The suspects are described as males with a medium complexion. One of the individuals was last seen wearing a black jacket with fur on the hood.
