NEWARK, NJ — In response to social media challenges encouraging the theft of Kia and Hyundai vehicles, 4th Precinct Community Service Officers T. Frye and K. Eley engaged in a Community Walk & Talk.
The officers provided anti-theft wheel locks to residents who owned these brands of cars.
During the initiative, officers required proof of vehicle ownership from residents. Those who own Kia or Hyundai vehicles can visit any Newark Police Precinct to request a wheel lock. This move aims to curb the rising incidents of car thefts targeted by online challenges.
In addition to distributing wheel locks, Officers Frye and Eley disseminated Crime Stoppers flyers. These flyers were shared with businesses and throughout the community to encourage reporting of any suspicious activities.
The Newark Department of Public Safety urges residents to take advantage of this initiative and to remain vigilant against potential thefts.
The department announced the initiative via its social media platforms, instructing residents to come forward with proof of ownership to acquire the anti-theft devices.
