HARRISON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Hamilton Township police officer and two emergency medical technicians saved a 20-month-old child from a choking incident Tuesday evening.
Cpl. Kevin McGowan of the Harrison Township Police Department was responding to an unrelated call when he noticed a stopped car with its rear door open and a woman calling for help. The officer found a toddler unconscious and blue in the face from choking.
McGowan acted immediately, taking the child from the car seat and starting back blows. The vehicle was parked near the Gloucester County EMS station on the corner of N Main Street and Colson Lane.
EMT Jenine Ellena saw the situation unfold from the EMS parking lot and ran to help. Together with her partner, EMT Richard Kennedy, they managed to dislodge the obstructing item, allowing the child to breathe.
