Martin County Authorities Discover Second Boat Likely Used for Human Smuggling

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents near causeways and waterways to remain vigilant after discovering a second boat believed to be used in human smuggling. Found abandoned in the mangroves near Sewall’s Point, the vessel’s discovery follows a recent interception by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.

Late last night, a boat carrying at least 18 individuals, primarily men thought to be from Ecuador, was intercepted off the Stuart Causeway before reaching the shoreline. This afternoon’s discovery suggests that the occupants of the second vessel have likely fled the area. Although no arrests have been made in connection to the second boat, the discovery has led to increased concern among local authorities.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or individuals in their neighborhoods and any unusual vessel activity near the shore. “It is likely that the occupants of that second boat have already absconded from our area, however, out of an abundance of caution, we are asking all residents to be vigilant,” stated the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in their citizen alert.

In response to these incidents, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office is ramping up patrols both on water and land. They will also be coordinating closely with federal partners, including the US Coast Guard, to bolster security measures and protect the community.
