MINEOLA, N.Y. – On Wednesday, Sotirios Spanos, a 33-year-old resident of Syosset, was arraigned before Judge Howard Sturim on multiple charges, including Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and Vehicular Manslaughter, following an August crash in Laurel Hollow that resulted in the deaths of a married couple.

On August 12, around 12:31 a.m., Odalis and Ismenia Urena, both 37, were traveling westbound on Northern Boulevard.

Spanos, allegedly intoxicated and driving at a high speed, crossed into oncoming traffic, crashing into the Urenas’ vehicle head-on. Data from the Acura Spanos was driving indicated he was traveling around 100 mph shortly before the collision and hit the Urenas’ car at approximately 84.5 mph.

Ismenia Urena was pronounced dead at the scene, while Odalis Urena died at Huntington Hospital an hour later. Spanos’s alcohol level was allegedly twice the legal limit hours after the accident.

Spanos was taken into custody on August 12, by the Oyster Bay Cove Police Department and Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 17.
