HOUSTON, TX – Joseph Terrell Goody, a 33-year-old Houston resident, has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for illegal possession of a firearm, to be followed by two years of supervised release.

Goody pleaded guilty on May 25. U.S. District Judge Alfred H. Bennett issued the prison sentence after law enforcement stopped Goody for traffic violations on Sept. 26, 2020. During the stop, they discovered he was carrying a loaded assault rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition. A struggle followed, but authorities were able to detain Goody and secure the weapon.

Further investigation showed that Goody has multiple prior felony convictions, including robbery, burglary, continuous assault of a family member, and possession of a controlled substance. Federal law prohibits him from possessing firearms or ammunition as a result.

Goody is now in custody and will be transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility at a later date.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Houston Police Department. Prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stuart Tallichet.
