NEWARK, NJ – Silvano Chable, 54, of Irvington, New Jersey, was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison for stealing more than $237,000 in Social Security benefits meant for his late brother. The sentencing was announced today by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
According to court documents, Chable applied for Social Security benefits on behalf of his paralyzed brother in March 2000. His brother began receiving benefits in July 2000 and died in May 2001. Chable failed to inform the Social Security Administration about his brother’s death, leading to continued monthly benefit payments. From May 2001 to November 2017, Chable unlawfully received $237,780 in Disability Insurance Benefits.
In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton sentenced Chable to two years of supervised release and ordered him to pay restitution of $237,780.
