BALTIMORE, MD – Officer Eric Payton, a nearly seven-year member of the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), has been charged with misconduct in office and theft for actions that took place on September 20. Upon learning of the allegations, BPD suspended Payton’s police powers. Following the charges on September 22, he was suspended without pay.
Both the Public Integrity Bureau of the BPD and the State’s Attorney’s Office were promptly notified and are conducting investigations. Acting Commissioner Richard Worley stated that any misconduct erodes trust and undermines the department’s relationship with the community.
Mayor Brandon M. Scott emphasized that transparency and accountability remain priorities for his administration. State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates said his Public Trust and Police Integrity Unit will thoroughly investigate the allegations against Officer Payton.
