Man Found Guilty of Luring Juvenile in Paterson

PATERSON, NJ – Julio Mejia, a 43-year-old resident of Wharton, New Jersey, was recently found guilty on multiple charges, including second-degree Sexual Assault and second-degree Luring or Enticing a Child. The verdict came after a jury trial before Judge Joseph A. Portelli.

The Prospect Park Police Department began their investigation on November 19, 2019, after receiving a report of a minor who was sexually assaulted by a ride-share driver, later identified as Mejia.

Evidence collected and witness testimonies, including that of the child victim, revealed that the victim and Mejia had sexual intercourse on two occasions after she took a Lyft ride on August 30, 2019.

At the time of his arrest, Mejia was serving in the armed services.

Mejia was convicted on Wednesday, and is now awaiting sentencing scheduled for February 9. He has been remanded to the Passaic County Jail.
