Hudson County Gang Member Tied to Assault Gets 90 Months in State Prison

NEWARK, N.J. – Sheldon Mays, a 23-year-old member of a street gang in Hudson County, has been sentenced to 90 months in prison.

U.S. District Judge Kevin McNulty imposed the sentence on Monday, for Mays’ role in a gang-related assault involving a knife.

On August 3, 2020, Mays and seven others assaulted a rival gang member in Jersey City. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries during the attack.

Mays had previously pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with the Jersey City Police Department and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, led the investigation. Mays will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
