WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 24-year-old man is in custody following a shooting that claimed the life of a woman in Northeast D.C. on Saturday afternoon.

Metro Police’s Homicide Branch reported that officers were called to the 1200 block of Duncan Place, Northeast at 3:13 p.m. for a shooting incident. Upon arrival, police found 21-year-old Jordan Coates suffering from gunshot wounds in front of an apartment building.

Coates was rushed to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

During their investigation, officers discovered suspect Damion Brown inside an apartment at the scene. This led to a brief barricade situation before Brown surrendered and was arrested. Brown, a resident of Southeast D.C., is charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed.

Preliminary reports suggest that the incident may be domestic in nature.
