TOMS RIVER, NEW JERSEY – Holmdel rolled over Toms River South, 42-6, in Friday night football, effectively announcing their presence for the 2023 season. Quarterback Jack Cannon led the charge for Holmdel with 128 passing yards and 93 rushing yards, while the defense posted strong numbers, limiting Toms River South to just six points.
Holmdel’s offense started slow, with no points on the board for either team in the first quarter. The action picked up in the second quarter when Cannon delivered a 20-yard run followed by a successful kick from Connor Mendini. Matt Iulo extended the lead with a 12-yard run, making it 14-0 at halftime.
Holmdel continued its onslaught in the third quarter. Cannon connected with Matt Tempone for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Anthony Setteducate sprinted 55 yards into the end zone, and Cannon added another score with a 40-yard dash. Alexander Todisco wrapped up Holmdel’s scoring with a 5-yard run, taking the game to a 42-0 lead.
Toms River South managed to score six points but had no answers for Holmdel’s robust defense. Connor Fields led Holmdel’s defense with six tackles, Alex Reyes had a sack, and Brayden Savage secured an interception.
Holmdel displayed a balanced attack on offense. Besides Cannon’s standout performance, the running game racked up a total of 282 yards. On special teams, Connor Mendini was successful in all six of his extra-point attempts.
The loss leaves Toms River South at 0-1 for the season, while Holmdel starts strong at 1-0. Both teams look to their next matchups as they move further into the season.
