Large Meteor Streaks Across Sky Visible from New York to D.C.

A meteor lit up the East Coast sky Sunday evening, leading to nearly 300 sightings reported to the American Meteor Society.

Visible from New Jersey to D.C., the fireball appeared at approximately 9:22 p.m. Observers described it as bright and moving from east to west.

The meteor displayed various shades of blue and had a gold or yellow tail.

The American Meteor Society received 297 reports within hours, many of which came from the D.C. area. A sonic boom was reported by multiple witnesses in this region. In Maryland and Pennsylvania, several people reported the meteor breaking into pieces.

The projected path of the meteor began over Cape May, New Jersey, and continued northwesterly toward Harrisburg, PA.
