VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Sunny skies and high temperatures dominate today’s weather, but beachgoers are warned of hazardous conditions including a high risk of rip currents effective through Sunday evening.

Today’s weather is expected to be sunny with a high near 89. Winds will be coming from the west at a speed of 3 to 7 mph. Tonight, skies will remain clear with a low around 70 and southwest winds blowing at 5 to 7 mph.

The Labor Day forecast anticipates another sunny day with a high near 95. Heat index values could climb as high as 100. The wind will be coming from the northwest at around 7 mph. Monday night is predicted to be mostly clear with a low around 74 and south winds at 3 to 6 mph.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield, VA, has issued a Beach Hazards Statement that remains in effect through this evening for southeast Maryland, northeast North Carolina, and eastern and southeast Virginia, including Virginia Beach. The statement warns of a high risk for rip currents at Maryland Beaches, Eastern Currituck County, and Virginia Beach, in addition to Accomack and Northampton Counties.

Visitors are strongly advised to exercise caution and to listen to NOAA Weather Radio or visit weather.gov for more information on these hazards. Spotter activation is not expected at this time.

Precautions should be taken to avoid life-threatening rip currents. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to the shoreline. Floating or treading water is advised if you are tired and unable to escape. Signal or call for help if necessary. Shore break hazards are also present; protect your head and neck by keeping your hands in front of you when in breaking waves.
