Linden, NJ – The Linden Police Department is introducing a new parking enforcement initiative aimed at curbing illegal parking. As part of this initiative, Municipal Parking Services (MPS) “Safety Sticks” will be installed at five locations in the downtown area. The technology is designed to target parking in restricted zones, such as near fire hydrants and crosswalks.
Police Chief David Hart emphasized that illegal parking poses safety risks and contributes to traffic congestion. He said the Safety Sticks will enhance enforcement without incurring additional costs to the city. The devices only capture license plate data of vehicles parked in restricted zones for longer than a designated period. Each alleged violation will be reviewed by a Parking Enforcement Officer who will issue a summons if appropriate.
The City Council approved the device deployment in June, and installation is currently underway at designated locations including parts of N. Wood Ave, W. Blancke St, and E. Price St. Additional locations may be considered based on the program’s effectiveness.
Chief Hart stated that similar technology has successfully reduced violations by up to 95% in other areas. The devices are expected to become operational in the coming weeks, but tickets will not be issued until October to allow residents time to familiarize themselves with the system.
