ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – In response to the growing migrant crisis in New York City, President Joe Biden announced that migrants will be moved to an airport in the Jersey Shore area. The decision aims to alleviate pressure on New York City, which is currently grappling with a high influx of migrant asylum seekers.
The Atlantic City Airport will be used to house New York City’s overflow migrants.
According to Bloomberg, the Biden administration had originally proposed a list of 11 federal facilities as possible relocation sites to NYC Mayor Eric Adams. Among these were a remote facility near Montreal and a tax office on Long Island. The decision to use a Jersey Shore airport adds another option to this list.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has yet to make a statement regarding the announcement. This move follows a similar action where thousands of Afghans were housed at the Joint Base MDL in central New Jersey after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Mayor Eric Adams has previously urged the federal government to assist New York City in managing the rising number of migrants living on the streets.
Recently, the city revealed plans to house some migrants in a decommissioned insane asylum and a shuttered private Catholic girls school on Staten Island.
