VOORHEES TOWNSHIP, NJ – With schools resuming the week of September 4, Voorhees Township Police are emphasizing the importance of safety for children commuting to school. Whether they walk, ride a bicycle, take the bus, or are teen drivers, proper precautions are essential for both the children and surrounding motorists.
Today’s installment of the department’s Back to School Safety Series focuses on bicycle commuting. Here are some key tips:
- Always wear a properly fitted helmet to reduce the risk of head injuries and death significantly.
- Whenever possible, ride on the sidewalk. If that’s not an option, ride in the same direction as traffic, staying as far to the right as possible.
- Use hand signals and follow all traffic rules. Ensure your actions on the road are predictable by maintaining a straight riding path and avoiding sudden swerves between cars.
- Make yourself visible by wearing bright colors and using lights. Reflectors on both clothing and the bicycle can increase visibility, especially during early morning and nighttime rides.
