Washington, D.C.— Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie expressed his astonishment regarding fellow Republican presidential candidates’ willingness to support Donald Trump, even if he were convicted of a felony. In interviews with ABC News, Christie raised concerns about the implications for the Republican Party and the 2024 presidential election.
Christie questioned the logic behind endorsing a convicted felon for the highest office in the land. “The truth is that, you know, [the GOP] can’t have a convicted felon as our nominee for president and expect we’re going to win,” he told ABC News’ Martha Raddatz.
During the interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Christie expressed disbelief at his opponents’ stance. “The most amazing part of the debate to me, was the idea that, you know, the majority of my competitors believe that you can have a convicted felon as our nominee for president and that they support that and that he could win,” Christie said.
He also warned that Trump’s potential nomination would ensure a victory for current President Joe Biden. Christie’s comments come as he trails in the polls, with figures showing him in the low single digits since the start of his presidential campaign.
The debate wasn’t smooth sailing for the former New Jersey governor; he faced multiple instances of booing from the audience. Nonetheless, his remarks signal a growing divide within the GOP over the role and influence of Donald Trump in the party’s future.
