Brick Township, NJ – A Brick Township police officer was injured in a shooting while responding to a domestic disturbance call. The ex-husband of the woman involved in the incident shot at the responding officer, injuring him with shattered glass fragments.
UPDATE: On Thursday, new details have emerged concerning the disturbing events of August 14, 2023, in Brick Township. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer released updated information about the incident where Corey Johnson, a 28-year-old resident of Brick Township, reportedly fired a weapon at a police officer.
According to initial reports, at around 8:40 a.m, the Brick Township Police Department was alerted through a 911 call. A female caller stated her Ring doorbell camera notified her of an intrusion at her residence on Judy Court, carried out by her ex-husband, Corey Johnson.
Following the alarm, the woman immediately left her workplace. While she was en route to her house and simultaneously on a call with a 911 dispatcher, Johnson blocked her vehicle using his own after exiting the property.
Upon arrival of a Brick Township Police Officer at the scene, a series of harrowing events unfolded. Johnson allegedly fired a shot aimed at the officer, hitting the patrol car’s windshield.
Johnson then turned the weapon on himself, inflicting a gunshot wound to his head.
Immediate assistance was rendered to Johnson by the on-site officers. He was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he remains in a critical condition.
Billhimer clarified that the initial reports suggesting the police officer was unharmed were inaccurate.
It has now been confirmed that the officer sustained minor injuries on his arm from the shattered glass of the windshield. The injured officer was taken to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick Township for treatment and has since been discharged.
