Teen Faces Hate Crime Charges in Midwood Stabbing

BROOKLYN, NY – A 17-year-old Brooklyn resident, Dmitriy Popov of Sheepshead Bay, has been indicted on several charges, including murder as a hate crime, in connection to the fatal stabbing of dancer and choreographer O’Shae Sibley.

The attack took place at a Mobil gas station at 1935 Coney Island Avenue in Midwood, Brooklyn, on Saturday, July 29, at about 11:06 p.m.

According to the investigation, Popov and his associates verbally attacked Sibley and his friends with homophobic and racist slurs when they saw them dancing joyfully after a day at the beach.

The situation intensified, with Popov allegedly producing a knife and eventually stabbing Sibley, inflicting fatal wounds. Sibley was later declared dead at Maimonides Hospital.

Popov was arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Craig Walker. If convicted of the top count, he could face a sentence ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment. The case will return to court on October 10.
