ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. – Detective Kevin Chavis was shot while serving a search warrant near Pembroke, North Carolina on Thursday afternoon, according to Sheriff Burnis Wilkins. Chavis, part of the SWAT team operation, was hospitalized with serious injuries following the shooting.
Two individuals, Kendall Ray Deese, 25, and Tina Locklear, 53, were arrested during the operation. Deese is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, in addition to drug-related charges. Locklear is charged with drug possession, maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance, felony conspiracy, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both suspects, who were not injured during the raid, have been issued a $15 million bond. The incident occurred while Chavis was working with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Division and the SWAT team during a search operation at a house on Evergreen Church Rd. in Pembroke, North Carolina.
