Man Charged Following Eluding Incident with Bayonne Police

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ – A 35-year-old man has been recently charged by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit following an encounter with law enforcement in Bayonne.

Kelvin Ortiz, a resident of Jersey City, is currently in custody at Jersey City Medical Center. He has been charged with eluding, four counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

On Thursday, at around 6:45 AM, the Bayonne Police Department received a report of theft from a gas station on 53rd Street near Avenue E. Ortiz was later located in a parking lot near Broadway and 54th Street. After being approached by law enforcement, Ortiz allegedly fled in his vehicle, hitting multiple police and civilian vehicles. An officer discharged his weapon during the incident. Ortiz was located later with apparent gunshot wounds.
