Jersey tomatoes have arrived across the Garden State

Tomatoes across New Jersey absolutely love the change in weather, even though you might not like the high heat and summer rains. For tomatoes, that’s why Jersey tomatoes are so darn good.

You might have noticed some of your tomatoes are turning orange to red this week and that’s good news. That means store-bought tomatoes are a thing of the past until the fall. But, you can extend your tomato harvest with some good practices to keep you from having to buy the store bought tomatoes of far lesser quality.

July is here and that means it’s time to start thinking about picking some delicious Jersey tomatoes.

These juicy, plump fruits are a staple of summertime and can be found in abundance in gardens and farmers’ markets throughout the state. To ensure a bountiful harvest, it’s important to care for your tomato plants properly throughout the summer.

Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your crop:

Water regularly – Tomatoes need consistent moisture to thrive. Water deeply once a week or more often during dry spells. Avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can lead to fungal diseases.

Fertilize – Use a balanced fertilizer to promote strong growth and fruit production. Apply every 3-4 weeks throughout the summer.

Prune – Remove suckers (small branches that grow from the base of the plant) to encourage larger, healthier tomatoes. Pinch them off with your fingers or use pruning shears.

Support – Use stakes or cages to support your tomato plants. This will keep them upright and prevent the heavy fruit from weighing them down.

Watch for pests – Keep an eye out for common tomato pests like aphids, hornworms, and whiteflies. Use natural or chemical controls as needed.

Once your tomatoes are ripe and ready to pick, be sure to handle them carefully. They are delicate fruits and can bruise easily. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut them from the vine and handle them gently. With a little care and attention, you can enjoy a bumper crop of fresh, juicy Jersey tomatoes all summer long.

Happy growing!
