Two newark firefighters killed battling blaze on cargo ship

NEWARK, NJ – In a tragic incident overnight, two brave firefighters lost their lives while battling a fierce fire that engulfed a cargo ship docked at Port Newark on Wednesday night. The deceased firefighters have been identified as Derick Waller and Tom Negovan.

The fire broke out at approximately 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Export Street and Marsh Street in Newark, triggering an immediate response from Newark Firefighters. The emergency call reported multiple vehicles ablaze on a ship located at Port Newark.

Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters discovered that the fire had originated on the 10th deck, where crew members and local stevedores were in the process of moving cars, vans, and trucks. The flames quickly spread to five to seven vehicles, eventually reaching the 11th and 12th floors of the ship, which was identified as the Grande Costa D’Avorio.

“Despite their courageous efforts to extinguish the fire, the intensity of the heat forced our members to retreat. Tragically, two firefighters lost their lives during the retreat,” stated Newark Fire Chief Rufus Jackson.

After an extensive search, the two fallen firefighters were located within the expansive vessel and were pronounced deceased.

“Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of two Newark firefighters, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Tammy and I extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones, and we pray that those injured have a full and speedy recovery. This tragedy is a painful reminder of the dangers our firefighters face and their remarkable courage,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy today.

The identities of the firefighters have not been released at this time, as their families are being notified.
