Maryland NRP reminds boaters to stay sober on the water

As the upcoming holiday weekend approaches, authorities are reminding individuals to participate responsibly in Operation Dry Water. While enjoying Maryland’s beautiful waterways is a popular activity, it is crucial to prioritize safety and responsible behavior.

Here are important reminders to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience provided by Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the National Resources Police Department.

Designate a Sober Skipper

When operating a vessel, always ensure that the skipper is sober and capable of safely navigating the waterways. Impaired judgment can lead to accidents and endanger lives.

Have a Knowledgeable Co-Operator

It is advisable to have at least one additional person on board who is knowledgeable about operating the vessel. This ensures there is someone capable of handling the vessel in the event the skipper becomes impaired or unable to operate it safely.

Alcohol and Water

Remember that the effects of alcohol are amplified on the water. One drink on land can have the impact of three drinks when boating. There are several reasons for this: a. Dehydration: Spending time in the sun can quickly lead to dehydration. It is essential to stay hydrated with water or electrolyte beverages instead of consuming more alcohol. b. Balance and Coordination: The movement of the water can make it challenging to maintain balance. Consuming alcohol further impairs coordination and increases the difficulty of keeping your balance on the vessel. c. Fatigue: Spending extended periods on the water can lead to tiredness, affecting reaction times. Alcohol intensifies fatigue and diminishes alertness, making it more dangerous to operate a vessel.

Hydration, Sunscreen, and Life Jackets

Prioritize hydration by drinking water or electrolyte beverages to combat the effects of sun exposure and prevent dehydration. Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Additionally, always wear a properly fitted life jacket for personal safety while on the water.

By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience on Maryland’s waterways. Authorities urge everyone to be responsible, vigilant, and prioritize the well-being of themselves and others.
