Canadian wildfire smoke back in New Jersey, Pennsylvania today

Smoke from wildfires in Canada has returned to the tri-state area today and air quality conditions are diminished across Pennsylvania and some parts of New Jersey.

The National Weather Service has issued an air quality alert for the region.

“Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution,” the NWS said.

Smoke originating from wildfires in Canada has led to the declaration of air quality alerts in our region once again on Thursday. The entire state of Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia, experienced a Code Red alert, indicating poor air quality.

Meanwhile, the entire state of Delaware was also under a Code Red, with New Jersey facing a Code Orange.

Grey areas show areas with high levels of particulate matter in the atmosphere from the Candian wildfires.

The majority of the smoke is concentrated in the upper atmosphere and is not directly affecting the air we breathe at ground level. However, as one travels further west, the smoke becomes more prominent. Areas in the northern and western suburbs of Philadelphia are experiencing reduced visibility due to higher concentrations of smoke, while southern Delaware and New Jersey are experiencing lower levels of visibility.

During a Code Red alert, the air quality is considered unhealthy for the general population. Authorities are urging residents to limit their time outdoors and avoid engaging in strenuous physical activities. Individuals who are particularly vulnerable, such as older adults, children, and those with respiratory conditions, are likely to be more adversely affected.
